Connie, I generally do political spots along the lines of my party affiliations or beliefs. If you use an agent, you can let them know your political preferences, so that when the opportunity comes up, they can submit clients who are sympathetic to a given party or cause.
If it is a small or local race, especially if it is out of my own district, I will usually take the job regardless of party, unless there is something particularly distasteful or rubs my own convictions the wrong way. It's a job and somebody's going to do it if you don't. The thing you want to steer clear of is repercussions from employers who recognize you on the spot/ad. That's why I recommend political spots for candidates that are out of your district.
I have one or two political spots on my demo reel, but they do not indicate a party affiliation and the candidates were of little note, which would make it difficult for the listener to peg my political priorities.
