Hi Gary,
I'd say some kind of mic pre/eq/compressor is a must have. Unfortunately you won't find all three functions in one box
unless you can spend about $3k ( Focusrite and Symetrix come to mind). A high-quality outboard mic-pre will be a large
improvement over the internal one in the Mackie. Also, Dbx makes some reasonably priced compressor/limiters. (like
the model 166) The compressor will really help bring up the subtleties in your voice, but don't overdo it !
I use a Neumann U-89, into a Focusrite Red6 mic-pre, into a Symetrix 602 digital eq/compressor/limiter/de-esser, which has AES/EBU digital outs
